Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal is waning citizens about a potential phone scam.

According to a press release, the sheriff's office has received several calls concerning the IRS-themed scam.

The scammer is targeting victims by threatening arrest if the victim does not pay unpaid back taxes.

The potential victim is then instructed to place the money owed on a pre-paid debit card, typically a Visa card, and send the phony agent the appropriate numbers from the card.

Ackal reminds citizens that phone scams, such as this one, are reported more frequently during tax season.

Should anyone feel they may be a victim of such scam, they can contact the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office, Bureau of Investigation at 337-369-3714.
