STERLINGTON, La. (AP) — Authorities say a drunk driver sideswiped a police car at a traffic stop in northeast Louisiana, killing one officer and injuring two others.

The wreck occurred early Sunday on Interstate 55 in Sterlington, about 220 miles northwest of New Orleans.

Sterlington Police Chief Barry Bonner says Officer David Elahi (uh-LAH-hee) was standing next to a patrol car, talking to a woman who had been stopped, when a pickup truck hit him and took off the car doors.

State Trooper Michael Reichardt says 44-year-old Tracy Govan was arrested on charges including vehicular homicide and vehicular negligent injury — killing or injuring someone by driving while drunk.

It was not clear whether the Monroe man has an attorney.

Reichardt says in an email that the other two officers had minor injuries.
