60-year-old Evangeline Parish Reserve Deputy John Granger of Reddell has been identified as the school crossing guard who died Thursday morning while directing traffic.

Trooper Stephen Hammons says it happened at 7:30 a.m. when 19-year-old Kimberly Fontenot of Mamou, driving a 2004 Honda passenger car, drove into the path and collided with 50-year-old Arleen Soileau of Ville Platte, who was driving a 2003 Mazda SUV. The front of Soileau's vehicle hit Fontenot's right rear door. Hammons says after the initial crash, Fontenot's vehicle rotated and hit Deputy Granger. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both Fontenot and Soileau were wearing their seat belts and sustained minor injuries. They went to a local hospital for treatment. Troopers say they do not suspect that either driver was impaired; however, toxicology samples were taken and are being examined.

Police continue to investigate. No charges have been filed against either driver.

Deputy John Granger had been a Reserve Deputy and Crossing Guard for the Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office for 3 years and 8 months.
