PORT ALLEN, La. (AP) — The recall petition against Port Allen Mayor Deedy Slaughter is heading to Gov. Bobby Jindal's desk.

WAFB-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1aYIlQv) the West Baton Rouge Parish Registrar of Voters certified 1,387 signatures Monday after receiving more 1,400 last Tuesday.

Jindal now has 15 days, with the help of the attorney general, to verify the information and call for an election to recall Slaughter.

If a majority of the city's voters agree to remove her from office, Slaughter can still run again for the mayor's position in a special election.

Slaughter has faced a string of controversies since taking office Jan. 1, including the debate over her $84,960 salary.
