Residents on Grand Isle say a tornado Friday swept over the barrier island, damaging property and downing some utility lines, before twisting itself back out to sea.Dodie Vegas, owner of Bridge Side Marina, says she and others saw the twister come off Caminada Pass and touchdown onto land. She says the sky darkened but there was no rain or hail, just strong wind as the tornado ripped about 40 feet of roof off a nearby motel and knocked down some power lines.

Vegas says no one was hurt.

Meteorologist Christopher Bannan of the National Weather Service in Slidell could not confirm the twister but says the weather system also spawned a possible tornado in Plaquemines Parish, where residents reported a sign down near South Plaquemines High School in Buras.
