SLIDELL, La. (AP) — Slidell Mayor Freddy Drennan says Reginald J. "Reggie" Laurent's job is safe despite a report of a long-ago marijuana arrest.

The Times-Picayune reports Drennan and Laurent met Thursday about the newly appointed prosecutor's arrest in 2002 for having pot and an open beer in his truck.

Laurent, who also has two DWI convictions, subsequently entered and completed a diversion program.

Drennan says he has no intention to dismiss Laurent.

Drennan nominated Laurent to replace Pat Berrigan, who is now city attorney. On Dec. 14, the city council confirmed the nomination.

Court records show Laurent was convicted of DWI in Slidell in 1996 and in Baton Rouge in 2003. Laurent says he underwent treatment and has not had a drink since 2004.
