According to Public Service Commissioner Jimmy Field, the Commission is looking into claims that telemarketers are violating the state's Do Not Call law.  Field appeared on "Mornings With Ken & Bernie" today and said "the Do Not Call list is working but the problem is, the list is for businesses that are legitimate not for scammers attempting to steal information or identities".

Field said that with the advent of VOIP ( voice over internet protocol ) three years ago it became virtually impossible to trace many of these scam artists.  Field advised consumers to call the Public Service Commission or the Federal Trade Commission if the phone calls continue after placing yourself on the "Do Not Call Registry".  The "Do Not Call Registry" number is 1-888-382-1222 and the Federal Trade Commission number is 1-877-382-4357.

According to Field the Public Service Commission is crafting legislation to increase penalties for scammers calling and stealing from people over the age of 65.
