ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) — Gary Jones' last day as Rapides Parish superintendent of schools will be Friday.

The Town Talk reports Jones, who was told in May that his contract would not be renewed, announced his resignation Monday.

Jones' contract expires Dec. 31. On May 1, The school board voted 5-4 to not extend his contract, leading Jones to look for another job.

Jones told the newspaper he has an opportunity to stay in the field of education and to stay in the area, at least for the near future.

He would not reveal Monday where he will be working because contract details have not been finalized.

Jones said he felt his continued presence was a distraction to the board during its search for a new superintendent.
