Red Bull mixed with vodka is one of the most popular drinks in bars and nightclubs.

Some people drink the cocktail to "turn up" at the club, but according to a new study, the mixture can easily lead to the “risk of fighting, violence, and participation in risky behaviors.”

I've always heard the (obvious) myth that the drink wasn't safe because you're clearly mixing an "upper" with a "downer," but Dr. Matt Parke—a co-author of the recent study—says the mix "compounds the effects of heavy drinking."

This study is the first to show that the two together may be exacerbating some of the negative effects of binge drinking.

The study was done with researchers who tested the effects of mixing alcohol and taurine (the "energy" part in energy drinks) on zebrafish.

The fish were divided into different shoals, and exposed to either just water, taurine and alcohol separately, or taurine and alcohol together. The behavior of each group was analyzed at different time intervals for a period of one hour. Scientists concluded that the fish exposed to both alcohol and taurine displayed more “risky” behavior (spending longer time in areas where they might be at risk from predators), and had fewer social interactions with other fish.

So, if you're planning on a marathon night of drinking, you should probably avoid mixing Red Bull and vodka.

Do you believe the results from the study is accurate based on your personal experiences with the drink? Let us know with a comment and share this with all your friends who order Red Bull and vodka at the bar.
