NEW ROADS, La. (AP) — Pointe Coupee Parish residents will be charged replacement fees for lost or stolen garbage cans beginning July 1.

The Advocate reports the Pointe Coupee Parish Police Jury approved a resolution this week stating residents will have to pay $45 to replace lost or stolen parish-issued cans.

Officials say the replacement fee is the actual cost the parish pays to purchase each trash can.

Parish Administrator Jim Bello said the parish has been issuing anywhere from 400 to 600 replacement cans annually to residents since signing a contract in 2006 for solid waste management services.
