Tom Petty, who rose to fame as front man for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, died today after being rushed to a Los Angeles-area hospital last night

CBS.com reported the rocker's death after reports he was taken off of life support Sunday night.

Other sources say Petty was found unresponsive at his home, then rushed to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital where he was put on life support.

According to his official Web site, Petty was still touring, with his latest show being held at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on September 25th. He was celebrating his 40th year in the American music business.

Petty and his Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Petty was also part of Rock n' Roll supergroup The Traveling Wilburys--which also included Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne.
