WELSH, La. (AP) — Officials say a runway extension and other improvements at the Welsh Airport could soon pave the way for smaller commercial planes and charter jets and spur economic growth.

Mayor Carolyn Louviere says town officials adopted a resolution Thursday approving a five-year master plan for the airport's layout, specifying future development starting in 2013.

Louviere tells the American Press the town will receive more than $1.2 million in federal and state grants over the next five years for airport improvements, including a 1,200-foot extension of its 2,800-foot runway. Other upgrades will include the addition of a terminal, airfield lighting renovations and installation of a perimeter fence.
