News broke yesterday afternoon that New Orleans Saints Pro Bowl running back Mark Ingram tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, and as a result, would be suspended the first 4 games of the 2018 season.

Today, in a statement released to the public by Ingram's agency, we learned a few things about Ingram's positive test.

One, it was the result of a random drug test taken after the 2017 season.

Two, Ingram has already appealed the positive test result through the arbitration process.

Three, Ingram believes he did not use an illegal substance due to an exemption with the NFL.

Here's the statement from Ingram's agent, David Jones:

"At the end of the 2017 season, as a result of a NFL mandated random drug test, Mark Ingram tested positive for a substance that was not a performance enhancing substance, nor an illegal substance, but a substance in fact permissible with the proper use exemption with the NFL. He has vigorously challenged the test results through the arbitration process. The arbitrator's Opinion is due on or before Wednesday, May 16. Upon having the opportunity to review the arbitrator's opinion, we will explore what further options are needed."

Many are confused by the wording of the statement, believing Ingram is beginning the appeals process. He's already appealed, and the arbitrator did not overturn the test result, as evidenced by yesterday's announcement.

On May 16th, the arbitrator will release details of his/her's final decision on the matter.

Potential "further options" could include an external appeal, challenging the league's arbitration process in court.
