Same Sex Marriage, The 2012 Election and Obama

He’s done it again.  It never ceases to amaze me that this President has timed things at the wrong time and in the wrong way.

Gay marriage has been on the national radar because Vice President Joe Biden put it there when he firmly placed his foot in his mouth.  He made mention that he was comfortable with gay marriage in America.  Then last night, you saw the state of North Carolina vote overwhelmingly to support the definition of traditional marriage, by a 61 to 39 percent margin.

North Carolina is a state that went for Obama in the 2008 election and has been projected as a state that will be a swing state in this election.  Now, President Obama has opened his mouth and erased all doubt as to where that state will vote.  President Obama announced his support for gay marriage.  That officially ends the status of that state as being in his column at all…ever.  North Carolinian’s have spoken overwhelmingly against the position that the President has just taken.  Why will they support someone that has taken the opposite position?  Unless the economy takes a rapid turnaround, I can’t imagine them thinking twice about who they will now vote for.

President Obama has made his road back to the White House that much tougher in a year that, by every indication, will be hard for him to get there easily.  This election will be a close one.  By his very words, he has made it that much closer and gift wrapped the Tar Heel State’s electoral votes and had them delivered to Mitt Romney’s doorstep.
