Rayne native and professional boxer Mason Menard was on the big stage this past Saturday night as he was fighting top contender Teofimo Lopez at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The 21-year-old Lopez (11-0, 9 KOs) was facing what was arguably his toughest opponent yet in veteran Menard (34-4, 24 KOs).

Things sure didn't appear that way for the Brooklyn native.

Just 44 seconds into the opening round, Lopez rocked Menard with an overhand right that had the veteran on his feet and made for a scary knockout.

Many boxing pundits are calling this the knockout of the year.

Menard had to be helped up from the canvas and all the way back to the locker room, still visibly dazed as he left the ring.

Boxing is a vicious sport but we sure do pray that Mason Menard has no issues with this scare.
