An annual golf tournament for the employees of Lafayette-based Schilling Distributing Company had a little more meaning behind it this year. The company, under the leadership of Herb Schilling and his son Buddy Schilling, switched gears and hosted a fundraiser for a new veterans memorial at Moncus Park. The tournament, held last Monday in Lafayette, was a sell-out and organizers raised close to 25% of the goal of $1 Million.

Proceeds from the tournament totaled $60,000 which was then matched by Herb and Renee Schilling for a total of $120,000. That's when an anonymous donor came forward and matched it all for a grand total of $240,000. By the time everything is tallied, Mr. Schilling expects to turn over a check for $250,000 to the memorial fund.

Herb Schilling joined Rob Kirkpatrick and Bernadette Lee on Acadiana's Morning News to recap the event and to talk about his ideas for the future memorial project.
