NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The former Philip A. Capdau Junior High School on Franklin Avenue in New Orleans is one of seven Orleans Parish School Board-owned properties that will go to auction on Thursday.

Interim Superintendent Stan Smith tells The Advocate (http://bit.ly/PoBGEI ) the "termination of properties" is part of the ongoing master plan to match demographics to the number of schools operated by the district.

The Capdau site is listed at $720,000.

Before Hurricane Katrina, Smith said, there were about 120 school properties. The district has identified a need for about 90 schools, he said.

If the building is not sold, Smith said, the board will be required to "mothball" the site, an extensive and expensive process that secures the structure while allowing for sufficient ventilation so mold does not grow.
