For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. That's science according to Sir Isaac Newton. While Newton was writing more about physical science it appears that his postulate has some significance in the emotional world as well.

Christmas time is the loneliest time of the year. However, those thoughts of loneliness can be exacerbated by your age and where you happen to be in the context of your life.

Researchers have determined that we as humans have three specific times in our lives we are at our loneliest. Those times are when we are in our late 20's. mid 50's and mid-80's. Please keep in mind we are not defining loneliness as being alone.

The reason for our melancholy is often because of physical and emotional changes that occur when we reach those ages. Most often are the realizations of a decline in mental and physical abilities. Plus our brain function appears to go through a period of change during those particular times in our life cycle.

The good news is that we do "grow out of it" with "it" being our darkened view of the world around us. Mental health professionals do say there are things we can do to help ourselves get over the blues. Among the most popular and effective methods? Exercise.

So if you're having a Blue Christmas or just a blue time in your life just know that being sad sometimes is okay. Being sad all the time isn't. If you do find yourself in what feels like a bottomless pit of self-created emotional sludge talk to somebody about how you feel. That will help you feel better and who knows you might be helping them feel better too.
