On 'Go Acadiana with Ken Romero and Dr. John Sutherlin' Senator David Vitter discussed the passage of a bill to authorize improvements to VA clinics in Lafayette and Lake Charles. According to Vitter,

This has been a long time coming, on the VA clinics on the Lafayette and Lake Charles clinics for which I have been fighting for for months and months going back to well before this VA scandal erupted. It's also been a long time coming to address in terms of action to address these VA scandal issues but we have come together in the Senate around a strong bi-partisan bill. The House has acted in a similar way so I'm hopeful we're going to finalize this all very quickly and send it to the President.

Vitter went on to say that the VA bill does at least three things:

  • We're finally getting the VA to move 'off the dime' and build these community based clinics around the country, 18 states, 26 clinics including Lafayette and Lake Charles.
  • For the first time ever we are giving veterans a card with real choice so if ever they either are more than 40 miles from a VA facility or they're not getting appointments in a timely way then they can go to other providers in their community.
  • We're giving the new Secretary of the VA actual authority to fire incompetent people or fire people that have committed fraud.
