PLAQUEMINE, La. (AP) — A Louisiana sheriff says one of his deputies shot and critically wounded a man brandishing a gun outside a trailer home.

Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi said the man pointed a gun at a deputy but didn't fire any shots before a deputy shot him in the buttocks Thursday around noon.

The Louisiana State Police is investigating the shooting, which occurred near Plaquemine.

Stassi said the mother of the man who was shot had called for help after her son allegedly beat her and shot out a car window as she tried to leave the trailer home.

Stassi said only one of the deputies who responded to the woman's call fired shots at the man.

He says the wounded man and the deputy who shot him are both white.
