SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — A celebration in Shreveport this week marks efforts to turn a community garden into a training ground for urban farmers.

It is billed as a homecoming celebration for Sankofa Gardens, which started in 2004 as part of a nonprofit arts and culture organization called Sankofa Vision.

Leia Lewis Henderson, founder of the garden project, told The Times of Shreveport that there are plans to create an urban farm that will grow food for revenue and help provide employment opportunities.

A Thursday reception was set to open the event. The activities conclude Sunday with a meal on the ground.
