SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — Shreveport police say a man is dead after he armed himself with a knife and became combative with paramedics and officers.

Cpl. Marcus Hines says police responded to a call Tuesday night to assist paramedics with a man having difficulty breathing.

When medics arrived, Hines said the man became combative and police were called.

Hines says the man came outside the home toward the emergency responders.

He says an officer fired one shot, hitting the man in the chest. The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police have not released the victim's name.

No officers or fire department personnel were injured.

Hines says Police Chief Willie Shaw placed the officer on paid administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.
