With the start of the new year, we often hear the phrase, 'new year, new you'. It's a way to wash away the old and start anew. Some people who have recently had an interaction with the Tyler, Whitehouse, Lindale, or Arp police departments, or the Smith County Sheriff's Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, or Texas Parks and Wildlife Department wish they could already have a clean slate.

Since the beginning of the year law enforcement throughout Smith County has been busy dealing with crime, drunk driving, domestic disturbances, illegal drugs, and various assaults. Just reading that line makes it sound like Tyler and Smith County are an awful crime-ridden place to live, but in reality, it's a safe place to live. It's just when it's written out and you look at the jail activity report it appears to be.

While looking at the daily inmate booking report from the Smith County Sheriff's Office, one of the biggest issues that remain in Smith County and throughout the East Texas area is driving under the influence. It only takes a small amount of alcohol to impair your judgment while behind the wheel. It's not just alcohol that can do that but illegal drugs and even prescription drugs can impair your reasoning and judgement.

If you're out and have had too much to drink - at any time of the day - there are options to get you home safely. A ride-sharing service, a friend, co-worker, or a cab can get you home safely and keep the public safe at the same time.

The following individuals were recently arrested and booked into the Smith County Jail and received at least one felony charge. These individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Some individuals have posted bail and are out of jail at this time while others are waiting for a bond hearing or court date. Some of the individuals below were detained by Smith County deputies and are being held on a US Marshal, Federal, or Immigration detainer.
