LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Officials say five people have applied to be the next Lafayette Parish school superintendent.

The Advertiser reports the deadline for applications is Friday.

Two applicants have publicly identified themselves so far. Donald Aguillard, the current St. Mary Parish superintendent, submitted his application on March 9. Aguillard was considered a top finalist for the job in 2011, but withdrew his name from consideration before the school board made a final decision.

In addition, Francis Touchet Jr. has submitted an application. Touchet was the principal at Erath High School.

Interim Superintendent Burnell LeJeune said officials soon will set a day and time to open all applications and determine next steps.

The school board hopes to select a superintendent sometime in May.
