Flexible pay options through state Civil Service programs meant that 1,400 classified state employees got extra pay last year even though the general workforce of Louisiana government go no pay increases.

The classified employees received about $1.7 million dollars.  The Civil Service programs allow managers at state agencies to pay more to retain employees, to pay more for employees that take on more job responsibilities, to pay more to employees who get advanced degrees and training that relates to their jobs.

A little over half of the employees that got raises for two agencies, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development along with the Louisiana Department of Insurance.
