SORRENTO, La. (AP) — The Sorrento Town Council has dismissed a police officer after learning he violated police department procedures by shocking a student with a stun gun at Louisiana Technical College's Ascension campus.

The Advocate reports the 2009 incident was videotaped. The campus later merged with River Parishes Community College.

Cory R. Prine, the police officer involved in the incident, told the council last week he was at the school's campus when an 18-year-old student asked him what the stun gun was like.

After he received consent from the student and the student's instructor, Prine said, he stunned the man with "a one-second drive stun in the back."

Police Chief Earl Theriot said a police officer is allowed to use a stun gun only as a means of defense.
