For the first time ever the state is raising the speed limit of a major highway to 75 miles an hour. 

Signs raising the speed limit from 70 to 75 will begin appearing over the next couple of weeks along rural sections of I-49 between Lafayette and Sherveport. Officials with the state Department of Transportation and Development say the highway features on these sections of roadway can safely accommodate the higher speeds.
