State regulators say the 2011 spring inshore shrimp season will close at 6 p.m. Saturday in certain areas within the Zone 3 management area.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said Wednesday that recent data indicates the quantity, distribution and percentage of small juvenile white shrimp have rapidly increased recently and the closure will protect developing shrimp in Zone 3.

Officials say the closure affects the portion of the Calcasieu Ship Channel between markers 85 and 86 south to the inside/outside shrimp line at Calcasieu Pass and the portion of Cameron Parish west of Calcasieu Lake and the Calcasieu Ship Channel. In addition, all state inside waters from the Mississippi/Louisiana state line west to the Louisiana/Texas state line will be closed except for certain waters within Zone 1.
