An Iberia Parish Sheriff's Deputy killed a New Iberia man Saturday while responding to a domestic disturbance.

Sheriff Louis Ackal said 34-year-old Coty Champagne was standing under the carport when he pointed a weapon at the deputy, who was responding to an emergency call from Champagne's stepmother. The deputy fired two shots at Champagne, who died late Saturday night.

Champagne's stepmother had made the emergency call claiming her stepson was terrorizing her house.

Louisiana State Police is handling the investigation.
