A more than 30-year-old court-ordered consent decree on the hiring and promotion of black and female employees within the St. Martinville Police Department may soon be lifted according to the report by the Associated Press.

The latest information is that the City Attorney Allan Durand spoke to the U.S. Justice Department.  Their Depatment of Justice’s Civil Rights Division told the department that the number of minority employees at the St. Martinville department was higher than any of the other 24 jurisdictions still under the consent decree.

The Chief says the department has maintained the diversity Smith inherited when she took over the chief’s post eight years ago.
