A St. Mary Parish Sheriff's deputy was called out to a single vehicle crash that happened at David and Middle Roads early this morning.

The deputy got to the scene today to find a car was up on a curb after hitting a guardrail.  The deputy says no one was around.

The deputy started investigating the situation, and he find out that the driver of the car was 37-year-old Abel Ortiz.

The deputy had to go to Ortiz's home to find him. When he found Ortiz, the deputy says he smelled alcohol on his breath and person.

The deputy conducted a field sobriety test on Oritz, and the deputy says the man tested poorly.  Ortiz then registered a .169% on his blood alcohol test.

Ortiz was arrested on the following charges:

  • Hit and run driving
  • Driving while intoxicated
  • Open container of alcohol
  • No drivers license
