A St. Mary Parish teacher turned himself in yesterday for his involvement in a case where he used a strange, and illegal, form of corporal punishment to discipline a student.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Spokesperson Traci Landry reported 34-year-old Randy Louis, a teacher at the St. Mary Parish Alternative School, was booked yesterday afternoon for charges of simple battery and contributing to the deliquency of juveniles following an investigation into an incident that occurred on school grounds.

On April 17, the sheriff's office received a complaint involving possible battery involving a juvenile. Investigators were led to Louis who apparently restrained a 9-year-old male student while instructing another to strike his fellow student.

A warrant was issued for his arrest on the charges involving the juveniles. He turned himself in yesterday afternoon at approximately 4:30 p.m. He was transported to the St. Mary Parish Detention Center. His bond was set at $1,500.
