A new state law toughens standards for privately owned public water supplies and sewer systems, and it could provide an answer for Lafayette parish residents complaining of brown water provided by Total Environment Solutions, Inc. (TESI).

Senate Bill 425 provides that if a system makes two or more violations in one year in any subdivision, the area council can take over its operations. The companies will also have to pay $1,000 a day for violations in neighborhoods where they provide on-site filtration systems.
