High levels of saltwater intrusion are causing the Vermillion Parish Police Jury to declare a state of emergency. Back in October, a barge slammed into a flow control structure designed to prevent such an intrusion into the Mermentau Basin. Officials say the parish's economy relies on saltwater staying out of the Basin. Farmers depend on freshwater from the basin to water their crops.
