State Police Investigating Officer Involved Shooting In St. Martin Parish

A shooting involving the St. Martin Parish Sherrif's office has left one man dead and one deputy injured.

At around 10 o'clock Friday night, narcotics agents with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office were running a routine traffic check when 32 year-old Alton Davis Jr. of Cecilia put his car in reverse in an attempt to flee. In the process, the car reportedly hit one of the deputies, spurring the other deputies on scene to open fire on Davis.

As a result of the altercation a critically wounded Davis was taken to a hospital. He later died. 

The deputy hit by Davis' car was treated for minor injuries.  

State Police Spokesman Stephen Hammons says their agency is continuing to investigate the shooting.
