The speed limit is now 75 miles per hour on rural portions of I-49 from Opelousas to Alexandria. Louisiana State Police Spokesperson Trooper Stephen Hammonds says they plan to patrol that area just as they did before. In the coming days the speed limit will also go up to 75 mph for stretches of I-49 between Alexandria and Shreveport. Hammonds says it's important for drivers to remember that the speed limit is not 75 until after you actually pass that sign. Hammonds says troops patrolling that area will be sure to pay extra close attention.
