The oyster harvest season will close Friday in the public seed grounds of Hackberry Bay, Lake Chien and Lake Felicity.

Robert Barham, secretary of the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, says the closing is effective at one-half hour past sunset.

Historically, the affected areas yield a smaller oyster crop. Based on current harvest pressures and the estimated stock sizes, Barham said Tuesday that the areas involved can sustain only a few days of harvest. As a result, he says, the closures were ordered to protect the long-term sustainability of the resource.
