DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — An official in Syria says a suicide bomber has killed six people in a central city.

The official says the bombing took place early today in the town of Sabtiyeh, which is east of Homs.

The official, from the Homs province, says the suicide bomber drove a truck. He says the blast happened near a school compound, wounded more than a dozen people and damaged nearby buildings.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to journalists. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.

Syria is engulfed by a civil war pitting supporters of the government of Bashar Assad against armed rebel groups. Some groups are formed by hard-line Muslims following the extremist ideology of al-Qaida. They have used suicide bombings in the past.
