SUNSET, La. (AP) — The longtime alderman for the Town of Sunset's District 2, Dalton Belson Jr., has died. He was 75.

His family confirmed Belson, the district's first black alderman, died Friday morning. Known by his nickname "Bulla," Belson served six four-year terms beginning in 1991 before he retired just more than two months ago.

The Daily World reports at that time, he said he planned to concentrate on nursing his wife and on maintaining his own health.

Mayor Charles James, who served two terms as alderman alongside Belson, said he will always smile when he recalls a man who "whether or not you wanted him to be, was a mentor."

The Sunset Town Hall will fly the U.S. flag at half-staff through the day of Belson's funeral. Arrangements are incomplete.
