A jury indicts a man accused of trafficking drugs into Acadiana. Prosecutor Stephanie Finley says Antonio Valdez, Jr. of Weslaco, Texas, was a part of a group that would use 18-wheelers, SUVs and other vehicles to smuggle in hundreds of kilos of cocaine and thousands of pounds of marijuana from Mexico into the area and other parts of the US.
Three people have been sentenced for helping traffic drugs into Acadiana. Dawn Broussard of Lake Arthur, Justin Regan of Iota, and Daniel Wright plead guilty for their roles in getting meth from sources in Texas and distributing it throughout the area.
After less than a year on the job, all 20 members of the police force in the northern Mexican town of Ascension resigned on Thursday.
The move came in response to months of violent exchanges with drug traffickers.
