A Louisiana Senate-passed proposal dealing with giving tax rebates to those who donate money to certain nonprofits has been rejected by the Louisiana House.

Rep. Kirk Talbot's bill, supported by Gov. Bobby Jindal, would give out nearly a dollar-for-dollar state tax rebate to the people and businesses who donate money to nonprofits that provide scholarships to attend private schools. The Louisiana Senate version of the bill included a $300 million annual cap on the rebates.

But the Louisiana House rejected that by a 63-32 vote, sending it to a six-member legislative compromise committee that will include three senators and three House members. Whatever proposal they draft will have to come back to both the House and Senate for approval.
