Almost a half a million Louisiana taxpayers who owe the state money may get a break. Louisiana Revenue Secretary Tim Barfield announced today his department is sending notices to 443,000 taxpayers beginning this week to notify them that they may be eligible for a tax amnesty program.

The program runs from September 23 through November 22. Delinquent taxpayers will have the opportunity to get caught up on their tax bills without penalties. Additionally, they will only be charged half the interest they would owe on the debt.

Taxpayers who owe the state money are encouraged to take advantage of this year's program because, although two other programs will be offered in 2014 and 2015, they will be less generous.

Barfield said the web-based program should take people no more than 10 minutes to complete.

State lawmakers approved the plan in hopes of generating $200-million for this year's budget.
