Teen Briefly Escaped From St. Bernard Parish

CHALMETTE, La. (AP) — A New Orleans teenager is back in the St. Bernard Juvenile Detention Center in Chalmette after about an hour of freedom on Sunday.

Sheriff’s deputies tell The Times-Picayune the 16-year-old, whose name was not released because he is a minor, escaped by climbing several fences. He was caught on a nearby street.

Sheriff Jimmy Pohlmann said the teen suffered several lacerations from scaling the fences and was taken to University Hospital for medical treatment.

Pohlmann said the teenager is in the detention center awaiting a Chalmette carjacking charge from about a year ago.

A second detainee, a 14-year-old boy from the Opelousas area, tried to escape with the other teenager but didn’t make it out of the facility.
