HOUMA, La. (AP) — The Terrebonne Housing Department is the recipient of a $99,000 state grant to be used for a homeless shelter.

The Courier reports the Emergency Solutions Grant, along with money from the annual Community Development Block Grant, will be used to operate and maintain the Beautiful Beginnings Center.

Kelli Cunningham, Housing and Human Services Community Development Department administrator, says the parish partners with the Start Corp., a nonprofit organization that helps people unable to live or function independently for various reasons. The group manages the shelter.

Cunningham says the money from the Emergency Solutions Grant will help Start and the overall operation of the facility.

Five families live at Beautiful Beginnings with five children. There are five applications pending review to fill the last three available rooms.
