BREAUX BRIDGE, La. (KPEL) -- More than a million dollars in marijuana has been taken off the streets following a routine traffic stop on Interstate 10 just east of Breaux Bridge early yesterday morning.

According to Louisiana State Police Trooper Stephen Hammons, police pulled over the driver of a van who was traveling east on I-10 early Monday morning.

"During the course of the stop, troopers obtained permission to search the vehicle and subsequently recovered 691.6 pounds of marijuana," Hammons said.

The driver, 38-year-old Pedro Matamoros of Brownsville, Texas, was arrested and booked into the St. Martin Parish Jail on charges of improper lane usage and possession with intent to distribute marijuana, Hammons said.

The case remains under investigation.
