The National Collegiate Athletic Association has this statement as their core purpose:

Our purpose is to govern competition in a fair, safe, equitable and sportsmanlike manner, and to integrate intercollegiate athletics into higher education so that the educational experience of the student-athlete is paramount.

That would make them sound like a pretty swell group of people right?

Well, they are simply a monopoly that rules college athletics like a former spouse with an axe to grind. More often than not it appears as if their rulings are about keeping the "student athlete" under their thumb. All of this while making sure they, the NCAA, get paid, a lot.

My latest reason for despising the NCAA is the ruling about today's NCAA Division One Softball Regional set for Baton Rouge. The game features two teams I really have a lot of respect for, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns and the LSU Tigers. Did you realize there is a chance that this game could be decided by Mother Nature and not the two teams actually playing the game on the field?

According to NCAA rules should today's final game be canceled because of weather or any other reason, the LSU Tigers would be awarded the regional victory. Now, I would be upset even if these circumstances were reversed.

By the way, when I went to verify this rule so you could see it in the words of the NCAA but the rules site was "down for maintenance".

These athletes have worked too hard to have their season come to an end because the NCAA is more concerned with a schedule and probably lining up TV deals and other monetary gains. What was that about " govern competition in a fair, safe, equitable, and sportsmanlike manner"?

Should it come down to the weatherman deciding the fate of these two amazing programs later today then the NCAA should change that "core statement" to reflect who they really are.

Here's my idea for a core statement:

We are in it for the profit . We will make millions if not billions on the backs of young people who are playing for the love of the game and the true spirit of competition. Our rules are designed to keep the powerful in control and to remind the student-athlete that they only matter when there is money to be made.

That's one college sports fan's opinion. It won't change anything but it sure felt good to call B.S. on a business that if it were any other business would have been busted as a monopoly decades ago.
