THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — Smoking along the walkways at Peltier Park may soon be prohibited.

The Courier reports the Thibodaux City Council introduced such legislation at Tuesday's meeting.

Mayor Tommy Eschete says citizens are noticing cigarette butts around the park and would like to see them cleaned up.

If passed, Eschete said the city will probably send out park personnel to monitor the walkways.

Local littering fines could also apply.

The measure appears to be aimed at Nicholls State University, where smoking is banned campus-wide and whose students, faculty and staff go to the nearby park to smoke.
