THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — To accommodate growth, Thibodaux's mayor says the city should consider bypassing local ordinances and allow developers on the north side of the city to run their own waste-water treatment facilities.

The Daily Comet reports that Mayor Tommy Eschete's proposal is one of several options the city is looking at. The city's aging sewer system has reached capacity.

A previous Eschete proposal to build a new $7.5 million sewer plant on the north side and raise fees to accomplish that has been harangued by residents and councilmen.

The north side is some of the only land left in this Lafourche Parish city of 14,000 people where there's room for development.

The city council is expected to take up the issue at an Oct. 16 meeting.
