Prosecutor Tommmy Block says a dead prison guard's blood on an inmate's hands, clothing and shoes shows that he was an active participant in the killing when an escape plan fell apart in December 1999.

Defense attorney Mark Marinoff said Saturday that David Brown was a follower, brought into the plot to escape because the leaders wanted a big man to help control other inmates.

Brown is the third inmate of the so-called Angola 5 to be tried in the death Captain David Knapps. Two codefendants have been convicted of first-degree murder.

Fifty-year-old Jeffrey Cameron Clark was sentenced to death. Jurors could not agree on a sentence for 43-year-old Robert Carley, so he has the only other possible sentence — life in prison.
