PRAIRIEVILLE, La. (AP) — State police say a 2-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries after being thrown from a SUV during a crash in Ascension Parish.

Trooper 1st Class Jared Sandifer says the one-vehicle crash occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday on Airline Highway, just north of La. 427.

Sandifer says Jonqualya Benton, of Prairieville, was northbound when her SUV ran off the road into a ditch, striking a driveway and overturning.

The impact from the crash caused the toddler to be ejected from the SUV. Investigators haven't determined whether the child was properly restrained. The boy is being treated at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.

Sandifer says troopers suspect excessive speed as a factor in the crash.
